Today in class Professor Helen told Claudio and me that we would need to prepare something to read for tomorrow in an end-of-the-week assembly. After the 10 AM break, Claudio was nowhere to be found, so I was left to come up with it. He had taken off with his friend Jean Claude to see Volcan Poas. I borrowed a book from Helen on Costa Rican customs and composed a short essay in Spanish describing the customs. I also learned the difference in the Spanish verbs “saber” and “conocer”, which was quite enlightening.
After class we met up with a taxi driver that Mayi had arranged for us and he took us to the Mariposa Gardens Butterfly Farm. We took a two hour tour which included a film about the life cycle of butterflies. It was in English, which was a bonus! In the park there were thousands of butterflies! I was wearing a yellow shirt and they kept landing right on it. By the end, they were landing right in the kid's hands! We saw plenty of the famous Costa Rican “Blue Morpho” butterfly, tiger butterflies, monarchs, and owl butterflies. After the tour was over, the kids stayed and played in the garden for another hour fascinated with the butterflies and how close up they were.
That night when we got home Alba was up in arms about what she could make for dinner that would suit the kids. We decided to make baked potatoes and salad. Their family had never had this before!! They loved it! I started feeling a little strange in my stomach so I turned in early. Unfortunately that night I started with bad chills and fever. Uh oh, the fun was just starting!
