February 2005

This morning we all slept a little bit later since we had been out late last night with the tour.  We were planning on doing the sky walk tour at 10:30 am.  We grabbed a quick breakfast at Stella’s and headed to the sky walk office.  Once we got there we realized the guided tour was scheduled at 1:30 pm instead of 10:30 am.  After a quick visit to the cheese shop, we headed back to our lodge to hangout until then.  At 12:30 we set out again.

The Monteverde Sky Walk is a series of five or six suspension bridges over the Saint Elena Cloud forest not far from Monteverde.  Daddy drove us up there and dropped us off.  We wanted no part of those bridges again today so he found an internet café where he could work while we did the tour.   Our tour was scheduled to last two hours but ended up lasting three hours.  It was so good and our guide Brian was so knowledgeable.  We walked over five enormous suspension bridges right through the canopy of the cloud forest.  It was magnificent!!!  We saw an armadillo, lots of birds and lots of trees and insects.  Wildlife seemed scarce but I think Costa Rica is becoming such a destination now that the wildlife may have moved further into the protected areas of the forest.  I was glad we had already seen the monkeys in Flamingo or I think the kids would have been very disappointed.  The suspension bridges we amazingly long and extremely high off the ground – I am glad Mark decided on the internet café because he wouldn’t have liked this tour at all.

Mark picked us up at 4:30 pm and we went back to DeJohnny’s to eat again.  You just couldn’t beat the food or the price!  The green salads in Costa Rica are really delicious and they tend to put fresh beets and heart of palm in them which make them delicious!  After our dinner we found a great ice cream shop and stopped for a treat before heading back to the lodge to turn in.  Today was a little rainy.  It was just a mist but after being out in it all afternoon we were chilled and tired.

We really enjoyed the Trapp Family Lodge.  It is quite comfortable.  We have discovered that most places do not use air conditioning or heat in Monteverde and because of the near 100% humidity here, you almost always feel damp.
