This morning we set out early - 6am to head for Key West. Neither Mark nor I had ever been that far south in Florida so even though it promised to be a journey from Weston, we wanted to give it a try! It took us about 3.5 to 4 hours to get down there but the journey itself was part of the fun. It was wonderful to see the old railroad tracks that once joined the keys and to cross over the long bridges surrounded by water that connected the many keys! We arrived in the quaint town of Key West around 10 am. Our first stop was The Little White House. It was well worht the admission for the tour. The Little White House was like a second home to Harry S. Truman and many of his presidential decisions were formed here. Our tour guide was beachy and fabulous! You could tell that she adored Harry Truman as she told many animated stories of the history of the house. The house remained largely untouched with many of the original furnishings. The poker table in the living room held particularly interesting stories. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit. From there we headed to the water and saw a huge cruise ship docked. As we wandered up the warf we saw many people who appeared to have forgotten to return home from their college spring break 20 years ago. I seriously saw one guy wearing a "Spring Break '85" t-shirt. I think I may have recognized him as the guy from my high school that never came back after spring break to graduate! Seriously, there are a lot of beach bums!
We enjoyed meandering through the tacky souvenier shops and decided on lunch at the Hog's Breath. After lunch we headed down Duval Street to see southernmost house in the United States. We passed the home of Ernest Hemingway as well as the Key West lighthouse. The kids posed at the zero mile marker of Highway 1. We spent the afternoon at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park and the kids enjoyed playing at the edge of the water while Mark napped and I relaxed in the sand. Before heading out, we decided to explore the old fort. We left Key West at about 4 pm and headed back to Weston after a fun but tiring day.
