Wednesday morning, 4/7, we headed on a Hawaiian Airlines flight over to Kauai for a few days. It was only a short trip, but we wanted to get over there to see the island! The weather was overcast when we arrived so we headed around the south side toward Waimea Canyon. We were all starving so we stopped in Poipu at Puka Dogs for a local Hawaiian hot dog specialty - delicious!
The Waimea Canyon was AMAZING! Just like the Grand Canyon in Arizona, but smaller! There were so many chickens and roosters roaming around it was comical! On the way back from the canyon, we took some time to just relax on the beach. The kids had fun digging in the sand and playing in the waves while Jonna napped on the sand and Mark checked email!!
On the way to the beach we stopped for some shave ice at Jo-Jo's Avenue! We read it was the best in the area so we needed to give it a try! Definitely tasty! We spent the night at the Marriott in Lihue. The hotel was being renovated, but it was still nice. The kids and Jonna explored the property as Mark got in a rest. It was late and storms were threatening so we grabbed some dinner at Kalapaki Joes and turned in for the evening!

This morning, 4/8, we headed to the north side of Kauai to Hanalei and the Kalalua Trail. It is the most beautiful place on earth! We meandered up the road along the northern coast enjoying the breathtaking scenery. We finally found a place to park up by the trailhead and started the Kalalua Hike. It is 22 miles round trip, but we completed only about 4 mile. It was not too steep and rocky but slippery and muddy! The views were stunning! Best we have ever seen! We hiked for about 2-3 hours before deciding to head back. It was super slippery and one side of the trail was a sheer drop off right down to the ocean! Jonna slipped and was grabbed by a stranger coming the opposite way...close call! After the hike we were FAMISHED! We headed over to Red Hot Mamas for some burritos to eat on the beach. Yummy! We spent the rest of the day on the beach and showered using the beach facilities before heading back to the Luhue airport to catch our flight to Honolulu. On the ride back to the airport, the view was incredible! Lots of films such as: Jurassic Park, South Pacific, 50 First Dates, and Gilligan's Island, etc. were filmed on Kauai!
