We biked via the Chester Creek Trail to the University of Alaska

Darby, Mark, and Grayson standing by a totem pole,

one of many that decorate the city of Anchorage

Grayson and Darby with their new friend

at the Athabascan village in the Alaska Heritage Center

Jonna, Grayson, and Darby outside the Yupik/Cupik village site

Bull whale jawbones like these that Mark and the kids are standing underneath

helped the Inupiaq tribes locate their underground villages from sea

This Inupiaq native had lots of interesting stories

about this northernmost native Alaskan people

Grayson hugged a polar bear (ok, a pelt!)

These Gray Whale bones stretched about 50 feet

Darby and Grayson visited the Unangax village site

At the Sugipiaq site, this native of the Aleutian Island tribe showed how dwellings were built underground to protect from hurricanes and polar bears -- The only entrance was via ladder.

Darby, Grayson, and Jonna pose by another totem pole, which were

commonplace amongst the Tlinget, Haida, Tsimshian, and Eyak tribes

The tiny door Grayson is standing in is the entrance to the Tlingit village site

We were treated to a presentation of native Alaska dancing at the Heritage Center

Grayson stands by a statue of a raven in front of the Center.

The raven is part of the native Alaskan tribes' creation stories.

Mark, Darby, and Grayson waiting to catch the shuttle bus back downtown

Looking up at our hotel from the street

Darby is waving out the window - the 5th center window from the top!

Jonna and Grayson by the Eisenhower Memorial ...

Eisenhower was the US President who granted Alaska statehood in 1959

Mark and Grayson pose by the monument

The marigolds in Alaska, like everything else, are HUGE!

This little engine stands by the Railroad Depot ...

Anchorage was originally built as a railroad town

What do you know - another totem pole!

Our hotel is on the left in the background

Jonna, Mark, and Darby in front of the log cabin visitor center in Anchorage ...

The flowers growing around and on the roof are beautiful

Darby, Mark (with 6-day mountain man beard, albeit a bit gray!), and Grayson

enjoying the park at 10 pm -- still lots of daylight!

The flowers here are beautiful - perhaps the long sunny days

contribute to their size and beauty!

Jonna stands in one of Anchorage's beautiful parks

Darby and Grayson found an airplane stuffed with teddy bears!

Wow!  What adorable fisher-bears!
