For Christmas 2009, we surprised the kids with a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico! We were all so excited to chase away the January blues with a trip to a warm and sunny destination! Some friends allowed us use of a company home in the Cabo del Sol Golf Resort and it was magnificent. Ten minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas and twenty minutes from San Jose del Cabo, it promised to be the perfect mixture of activity and serenity. We cashed in some frequent flyer miles and headed southwest for a five day getaway! Once we arrived, we obtained our rental jeep and headed to the house. WOW! A beautiful view of the Pacific and the Bay of Cortez from either of the decks. After checking in and exploring the home, we headed to the Walmart to stock up on goods for the week and then into downtown Cabo San Lucas to explore. We enjoyed a delicous dinner at Desperados. Back at the house that evening, we relaxed in the hot tub and swam in the pool. There were very few clocks in the house and it was so easy to lose track of time.

The sunrise this morning over the Bay of Cortez was incredible. I dragged Mark away from his computer (and checking east coast work email) and we ventured down to the beach to hike on the rocks. It was so refreshing. The house is part of the
Cabo del Sol golf course development
and it is very private. We saw few people on our walk. Atypical for the Blounts, we did NOT do anything educational on our trip today and just sat by the pool, enjoyed each other's company, relaxed and read. That evening we all walked down to the Sheraton Hotel on property and browsed the gift shop and enjoyed some ice cream. A great day to decompress from the pressures of life!

This morning we set off up the western coast of the baha toward Todos Santos and then on toward La Paz. This small coastal oasis village was initially founded as a Mission in 1724. Later, it became a major sugar-cane producer. Today it is a cute artsy town and we enjoyed exploring it. We lunched at the Hotel California and the fish tacos were fantastic! We have already eaten our weight it seems in guacamole so we bought a
molcajete, the traditional Mexican version of mortar and pestle for about 10 bucks in one of the shops. We really enjoyed Todos Santos and from there, we headed north to the city of LaPaz. It was a long ride and as we neared the city, the traffic became a bit unbearable. We finally arrived and strolled along the promenade waterfront for a bit. It was nice, but not really worth the long drive. They have done a good job selling that town as a bit more than it actually is. We are glad we went and saw it, but would not spend the time heading up that way again when we could be lounging by the pool or ocean! As we had come that far, we decided to continue to Playa Tecolate on the
Canal de San Lorenzo (Sea of Cortez) and the Isla Espiritu Santo island. We enjoyed exploring that beach and skipping stones before heading back. It was a LONG ride back, but we finally made and it and spent the rest of the night relxing in the hot tub after a fun day exploring the peninsula.

Today we enjoyed another early morning beach hike and then camped out at the pool at the Sheraton Hacienda for the entire day. We sipped fruity drinks with umbrellas and enjoyed the pool, beach, and sun! As we rarely sit still and relax on our trips, I am sure the kids didn't quite know what to make of it, but after yesterday's long day trip, I think we all needed a day at the pool! After a relaxing day at the pool, we grabbed some dinner at Tomatoes, one of the several restaurants on the Sheraton property.

Today was our last full day in Cabo so we decided to seek out some adventure. We headed down to Medano Beach, a more touristy and populated part of Cabo San Lucas and rented some jet skis to head out to explore the bay. Mark took off with Grayson and I had Darby on the back of my jet ski - we had never done jet skis before! It was so much fun and we had a blast. We switched at the 1/2 hour mark. There are NO pictures of Jonna jet skiing because Mark was too reckless to be trusted with the camera! Sure enough, he and Darby turned their jet ski over and had to go in a few minutes early because they took on too much water! We enjoyed some lunch at a place called The Office - Jonna has eaten fish tacos every chance she has had and Mark is testing all the different ways that nachos can be prepared! Yummy! Tonight we just hung out at the house and relaxed and caught part of the President giving his State of the Union address... Heading home tomorrow!

It was sad to head back today. We so enjoyed the warm weather break, but we were also excited to see the progress on our house as construction on the back deck had started while we were gone. After the last early morning hike on the beach and rocks, we packed up and headed out. We attempted to get a family photo on the top deck of the house with the tripod and were only mildly successful. :( We left in plenty of time to venture into San Jose del Cabo on the way. We much prefered it to Cabo San Lucas as it is an artsy town with many cool shops and restuarants. We spent a few hours browsing and enjoying our last authentic Mexican meal (nachos for Mark and fish tacos for Jonna) and we headed to the airport! We arrived home safely that evening completing another fun and memorable Blount adventure!
