We arrived in Durango late last evening and grabbed a quick bite at a Mexican restaurant in town. We stayed at the Hampton Inn right in town on Main Street. Durango is such a neat town I just love being here.
We got up early this morning and headed up to Purgatory at the Durango Mountian Resort. They have all kinds of fun summer activities and we each rode the alpine slide twice. It went fast and was a lot of fun!
We stopped at the Honeyville store on the way back into Durango and the kids enjoyed seeing real live bees making honey. They have the best varieties of honey there and I couldn't resist coming home with a couple of jars. From there we headed back into town and had a bite of lunch at Scootin' Blues. We walked around downtown Durango for an hour or so and stopped into see the old Strater Hotel which was built in 1887 before heading out. Durango is such a cute little mountian town I always enjoy visiting.
We headed south on Hwy 550 to connect with Hwy 160 east and headed east toward Pagosa Springs. There was quite a bit of traffic and we realized that unfortunatley a biker had been hit and killed right before we got on the road. There was a major bike race this weekend and there we saw thousands of bikers riding all along the road. We waited in traffic for about 30 minutes until we passed the accident scene. We never did find out what happened exactly but it was just so sad to see that crumpled bike. There are tons of bikers on that road but hardly a shoulder on which for them to ride.
From Pagosa Springs we continued over Wolf Creek Pass which is steep and home sliced in two by the continental Divide. It was cold up there and we hopped out to take a quick picture but donning shorts and t-shirts we were awfully quick to climb back into the car! It took forever to get the Great Sand Dunes but we finally arrived just as the visitors center was closing.
